St. Croix Rod Information
Since its introduction, the Legend Ultra has proven that premium fly rod performance does not necessarily have to mean premium price tag. Embraced across the country, even cynics were pleasantly impressed with the outstanding casting performance of the Legend Ultra.
In 2000, St. Croix introduced a breakthrough rod-building process known as Integrated Poly Curve Technology. IPC allows us to taper the rod on one continuous curve from tip to butt. This is a profound improvement on the previous process used in creating high-end rods known as compound tapering, which can create weak points in the blank. With IPC technology there are no weak spots, just crisp, clean casts like you've never experienced before. IPC is featured in Legend Elite spinning and casting rods and Legend Elite fly and, new this year, Legend Ultra fly rods.
Today, we proudly introduce to you the all new Legend Ultra Series. Incorporating our latest rod technologies known as IPC Technology, we have pushed the Legend Ultra to an even greater position of value. The blanks are smoother, faster and stronger than ever before. All new rod components nicely round out the evolution of the series. And, most surprisingly, the price tag remains the same, keeping the Legend Ultra right where we like it, rivaling rods on the water that cost far more.
As you may know, most high-performance rods are designed using compound tapers that employ three to four measured transition points along the blank where the slope of the taper changes. Those same transition points, however, can also create points of weakness on the blank. That's where our revolutionary Integrated Poly Curve (IPC) Tooling Technology comes in.
The first process of its kind, IPC creates tapers that are a continuous curve
from the tip to the butt of the rod, eliminating all weakening transition
points. That means stronger rods. And actions that cast with unprecedented
smoothness. It's a remarkable performance breakthrough. And it's exclusive to
St. Croix's Legend Elite and Legend Ultra series of fly rods.

The "action" of a rod is determined by where a rod flexes along the blank. Faster action rods flex mostly near the tip. Moderate action rods flex more near the middle of the blank. Slower action rods flex down into the butt section. |
The "power" of a rod refers to how much pressure it takes to flex the rod. Different rod powers are engineered to efficiently handle a certain range of lure weights and line sizes. To select a rod power that will perform best for you, simply narrow your choices to rods designed to cast the weight of lures and sizes of lines you’ll fish with most often. It's that simple.

| Note: the "uneven" wall thickness on compound-tapered blank versus "even" wall thickness on IPC-Engineered blank. |
This ensures better longitudinal strength because the fiber alignment is
never distorted at transition points. It also results in more uniform strength,
stiffness and sensitivity along the entire blank shaft for better vibration
transmission and enhanced feel.
